| In the past humans acted with such rigid behavioural conformity in every aspect of their lives that we would scarcely recognise them as humans at all! As birds flock together and cry out the same songs, so humans orchestrated their emotions and actions in such a strict accordance with those around them. Only recently, in the past few thousand years, have we begun to inch our way out of the perceived gaze of one another. Yet still we lurch back embarrassed of our naked individuality, taking out life insurance, getting up to the sound of alarm clocks and allowing ourselves two weeks of holiday a year.
