“Aa6353, no, Aaf753 or… Aafd54. Or, maybe it was Aa5h7l! No…” Then I realised! He wasn’t failing to remember the code, he was reciting the whole thing! He wasn’t getting it wrong, he was getting it right! All of it! Every single time! He was a receiver. I just had to join the guesses together.

I started him off again, said to just recite what he thought the six digits were without anything in between, just relay the guesses off as they came into his head. He rattled off an enormous combination of letters and numbers, I had to write them down on two sides. It took me half an hour to decode it: “I cansty rep the ball no mwooer”.
